Hey Joe,

I agree that there are other ways to look at a pages effectiveness besides bounce rate, and you make some great points... I just wanted to provide more of a quick guide that might help others. I should spend some more time analyzing bounce rate and I probably will in another article to tie these two together because a lot of factors can influence it. For example, we get a lot of referrals from a certain site that gives us a very high bounce rate on certain pages because the relevance isn't the best from the referring source, so bounce rate can be misleading.

And there are other factors to consider time spent on a page, navigational goals etc and like you said what your specific goals and funnels are in analytics.

I don't agree that bounce rate is the best way to determine if a page is not effective. Bounce rate can be a deceiving number.

The most effective way is to set specific Goals and funnels in Analytics. The real goal of a site is to generate revenue so setting goals based on sales and leads is the best way to determine if a page is effective.

I can't agree more with the a/b testing colors. The quality of the content, how it is presented, clear paths of action and many other things are way more important. Button and text colors will not make a big impact and a 30% improvement from changing a color is impossible over a long enough test period.

"Your main admin username cannot be changed from the WordPress Dashboard once it has been selected. However, if you have knowledge of phpmyadmin you can change your admin name from there, directly in the wp_users table."

Or set up another account with admin rights and use that. Use that to change the admin rights of the poorly named "admin" account, so it's just a subscriber. (Maybe you can even ban/block it - haven't tried that.) Perhaps this is even more secure, as trying to break in to "admin" serves as a distraction.

Thanks for all the suggestions - much appreciated.

I would avoid using flash where possible for a few different reasons.

First, you are mostly correct about flash being un-indexable, there are a few certain things you can do to flash to increase its search engine optimization, but it's not that effective.

Second, depending upon the size of the flash movie, and the internet speed of your visitor, it may take a long time to load, and they may leave before they even see your site.

Third, apple product's like the iphone, ipod, and ipad don't support flash, and some people don't have flash installed on their browser, anybody attempting to visit your with one of these devices wouldn't see your flash.

Fourth, I just personally don't like flash intros on websites, when I visit a site I'm usually there to get information, not watch some flashy video that gives me nothing of value. I would rather see the company take the time, effort, and money and invest it in expanding their website content, making it better, and more useful, remember that is why I came to the site to find information, not watch some video.

Does Flash constitute good findability? From what I have heard it is not indexable by search engines, but it could be used to draw attention to content.

Hi Gary, in order to change the line height of the text on your page you would need to use the css rule "line-height". You can either do this on an individual container such as a paragraph or div tag, by changing it to [p style="line-height:16px;"]your text here[/p] or you can apply the rule to a class or id in your css file.

Hi Samantha,
you certainly can use title tags on your images as well. Just keep in mind that when users hover over your images they are going to see title tag associated with that image, so you need to evaluate if that is still visually appealing with your site design, and make sure that they are readable and go with the picture.
